Foil Stamping
Foil stamping, pressed under heat here in Ellerslie.
Real metallic foil in gold, silver, copper, brass or holographic, stamped into the sheet so it stands slightly proud of the page and catches the light. Not many printers in New Zealand keep a hot-foil press of their own. Ours sits on the same floor as everything else we make.
What it is
Hot foil, not foil-effect ink
Hot foil stamping works with heat and pressure. We heat a metal die, press it through a ribbon of foil, and a thin layer of real metal transfers onto the stock. What comes off the press catches the light differently to the rest of the page, and you can feel the edge of it with a fingertip.
That's a different thing to metallic ink or a printed foil effect. Ink sits flat on the surface. Foil sits proud and keeps its shine, and it looks best on uncoated stocks where the contrast is sharpest.

Foil is a specialist finish and it isn't right for everything. It does its best work on the pieces someone picks up for a second look. On plenty of other jobs we'd tell you to save the money and print it plain.

What we can foil, and what it does best on
Most foil jobs come out in gold, silver or copper on a heavy stock. There's a lot more than that in the drawer. What suits depends on the piece, the stock it's printed on, and how the light is going to hit it where it ends up.

Metallic, Holographic & Specialty Foils
Gold, silver, copper, brass and rose gold cover most packaging, stationery and folder work. Past those we can run holographic, patterned and pigmented foils, which show up on limited editions and anti-counterfeit jobs.
Foil with Other Finishes
Foil with an emboss, a deboss or a specialty die-cut. Each pass runs here in Ellerslie, one after the other, so the job never leaves the building to have a step done somewhere else.
